The Historic Downtown Certified Farmers Market opened for its 2013 season on Thursday evening. Dozens of booths lined F Street and Beermann’s Plaza while locals browsed and bought fresh farm produce from local growers. The first Farmers Market of the year was well-attended and several of the booths were crowded throughout the evening with eager shoppers.

Sponsored by the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, the Farmers Market will run every Thursday night from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through August 29.

The Second Annual Community Wellness Faire drew large crowds in spite of the hot forecast for Friday. The all-free, kid-friendly event was a welcomed invitation for anyone with children just out of school and getting restless.

One of the many health and wellness messages of the day.

Promoted by Lighthouse Counseling and Family Resource Center of Lincoln, the Wellness Faire featured over 40 vendor booths spread out on the grass at McBean Park. Health and wellness were the themes of the day, with many booths offering exercise and dietary services. Kids could also climb inside a Lincoln Fire Department truck, ride ponies, explore a nature walk, pose in a photo booth, play in the jump-houses and practice Zumba exercises. Raffle prizes were given away by many of the vendors.

Many families took advantage of the cooler morning hours, visiting the booths early. A soft breeze kept the worst of the heat away.

Asking Tony Overbay to smile is pointless. He is constantly smiling. Sitting in the passenger seat of a vintage, red, Thunderbird convertible, his grin widens as the car enters the athletic field of Glen Edwards Middle School (GEMS) on Friday morning. Hundreds of school kids, teachers and parents cheer as they line the running track. The middle school band is playing music and local media is anxious to chat with him on live TV.

Overbay is about to begin his now-famous 24 hour run. Not 24 minutes…not 24 miles. 24 hours. For the third year in a row, this is his way of kicking off the GEMS 5K run.

Owner Mike Drust celebrates Beermann’s first year

Owner Mike Drust sits in the first-floor dining room at Beermann’s Restaurant in downtown Lincoln. Beermann’s celebrates its one-year anniversary on Thursday, April 11.

04-10-2013

Owner Mike Drust has enjoyed this last year since he (re)opened Beermann’s Restaurant in downtown Lincoln. This Thursday, April 11, will mark the one-year anniversary since he opened the doors.

Opening Beermann’s was a big job. The former establishment had been closed for six years when he took it over. Drust said, “It took me about six months to come in and clean it up. We took most of the furniture out, it was more of the old saloon-style furniture. There were a lot of the taxidermy animal-heads all around. We took those out and decided to go with more of what Lincoln was about.”

Pointing to the numerous framed photographs on the walls above the booths, he continued, “We put up all these pictures of Lincoln from the late 1800′s and early 1900′s, more along the line of the history of Lincoln. I went over to the frame shop that Tom (Jones) has. He got the pictures together, framed them all up and he came over and hung them up, too.”

beermanns_003

The first-floor dining room seats about 88 guests.

Drust has a lifetime of experience in the restaurant industry. He started in the pizza business at a very young age…very young. He said, “My first job, I was nine years old. I worked for an old Italian guy who didn’t speak English. I worked for him until I was 18 years old. He helped me open my first store at the age of 18.”

Drust worked the pizza business for 45 years, spending the last 23 years operating several Round Table restaurants in the area. He retired two years ago.

“I enjoy the restaurant business, you get to meet a lot of people and 99 & 9/10% of the time, it’s all on good terms,” he laughed.

Drust’s laughter fills the large first-floor dining room at Beermann’s. Continue Reading
